Preparations

Firstly, make sure you've installed Henkaku from the official website. Do not trust any other sources other than henkaku.xyz to install Henkaku on your Vita as they might have dangerous code in their builds that could brick your console!

Then to successfully install KanColle Kai, you need the following:

  • The latest pre-translated base VPK of KanColle Kai
  • The latest patch update of translation VPK and the update patch hotfixes
  • A PlayStation Vita, Phat or Slim. PlayStation TV is also reported to work, but requires some additional hacking.
  • System Firmware version 3.60
    • It is very important you do not update to a later firmware after 3.60 as you will lose access to the Henkaku exploit, which is essential for playing the translation of KC Kai as well as other dumped titles. If your firmware is below 3.60, you an manually update to 3.6 (links to things)
  • An updated molecularShell (usually installed with Henkaku).
    • VitaShell by thefl0w also works, but the latest version has a bug that clobbers files should one install an VPK update: Case in point, installing the base pre-translated VPK of KC Kai and then the hotfix causes the hotfix VPK to delete the base game for unknown reasons. Earlier versions did not have this bug. It is suspected that it's something to do with being able to use a USB Drive as memory card on the PS TV with VitaShell v1.6x.
  • At least 3.5GB of Free Space for the game install, since decompression takes extra space temporarily.
    • You're cutting the cheese thin with a 4GB memory card, but it is possible to install using such a card as long as you have at least 2GB free.

Easy Installation Method

  • Using USB Mode in the shell of your choice - be it VitaShell or molecularShell - copy the VPKs to either the root of your PS Vita's memory card, or a folder easily accessible.
    • USB Mode can be enabled by pressing Select while your preferred shell is open; if an FTP server starts instead, you'll need to change your Shell's settings by pressing Start and changing the Select button's action to start USB mode. If USB mode is not available, you will need to update your shell application.
    • For example, if drive E was your PS Vita in USB Mode (via molecularShell or VitaShell), making a folder called E:\vpk would be perfect.
  • When the copy is complete, allow up to a minute for the Vita to flush it's memory buffers to the memory card. Then, unplug the Vita from your computer and exit out of USB Mode on molecularShell/VitaShell.
  • Using VitaShell or molecularShell, navigate to the folder containing the VPK files, and choose the Kantai Collection VPK to install before installing the latest Hotfix VPK.
  • Once installation is complete, press Start to open the Shell's menu, and look for a option that says "Refresh LiveArea". This causes the OS to rescan installed titles.
  • If all goes well, you'll have a new bubble that says "Kancolle Kai".
    • Everytime you want to play KC Kai, you'll need to ensure Henkaku is active first. Otherwise, an error will occur and if you try again, the Vita will reboot and complain about a system error.
  • You are now ready to sail the seven seas with your fleets.

Alternative Installation Method (requires PC with Windows, OS X or Linux)

  • Make a temporary folder in your profile (Windows) or home directory (if on Mac or Linux). Call it "VitaTemp".
  • Extract the pre-translated base VPK of KanColle Kai into that folder using WinRAR, 7-Zip, Archiver or File Roller (the program varies depending on OS).
    • If done correctly, you should have something like <path to VitaTemp>\app\PCSG00684. If not, stop and ask for assistance in the Discord support channel.
  • Repeat the process with the latest patch update. When asked to overwrite, allow it to do so.
    • There should be no additional folders created, the patch update overwrites existing files that you already extracted.
  • Repeat the process with the rest of the hotfix updates like you did in the step above, allowing the archive software to overwrite the existing files.
  • Once that's complete, copy the game to your Vita using the USB mode of molecularShell or VitaShell. You may need "view hidden files" and "show protected system files" enabled, as VitaShell marks certain folders as protected and hides them normal view. The PCSG00684 folder goes to the app folder on your Vita's Memory Card. If using FTP, copy the PCSG00684 folder to ux0:/app/.
  • Once the copy is complete, press Start to open the Shell's menu, and look for a option that says "Refresh LiveArea".
